Anytime you encounter the police, you need to be on your best behavior. You never want to give them any reason to suspect something of you and put them on guard. Here are some things you definitely should not do when in the presence of the police:
- Resist arrest
- Run from them
- Grow angry
- Touch them
- Interfere with their activity
- Provide any information other than the necessary name and address
- Reach into pockets or car compartments without the officer’s knowledge and instruction
The police protect the public and even if they get a slight hint that something about you is off, they will keep an eye on you or maybe even arrest you. If you are not charged with a crime, you may leave within 48 hours.
